Several different weight-loss surgery options are available. They involve modifying the stomach and/or intestines to decrease the amount of food that you can eat, and some procedures change the normal absorption of the food you eat.
Weight loss surgery can be divided into three types:
Restrictive procedures like laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy
- Decrease the amount of food intake at one time
- Promote a feeling of fullness
Malabsorptive procedures
- Reduce absorption of calories, protein and nutrients
- Decrease the amount of food intake at one time
Combination procedures like the roux-en-y gastric bypass
- Involve characteristics of both restrictive and malabsorptive procedures.
